please read the lyrics or listen to the MP3 before reading further...

I came up with this idea during a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] fiddledragon (*hugs the muse*) and realized it would make a good song. I wrote the song at Boskone — about which, again, more later — and tweaked it a bit when I got home.

Who is she, then?

As a maiden, she is bright colors, music and noise, real-time interaction, and instant gratification.

As a priestess, she teaches us that, to make ourselves understood, we must make our words the perfect reflection of our intention. She patiently — kindly but without a hint of lenience — corrects our errors and directs us on the path of wisdom.

As a mother, her invisible womb is the place where our words — now imagined as our seed (the real thing is just information, too!) — are transformed and given life so that we can send them out into the world.

One of her open names is "Sophia". As for her secret name — it is whatever you cried aloud when you finally tracked down that pernicious bug only to realize that you should have gone with your first, whispered instinct to begin with.

She is Code.

I don't know if "Brain and Brain, what is Brain?" quite works as a secret name.

I like this song but note that you have addressed only two aspects of the Goddess: maiden and mother. Those of us who are firmly in mother but see crone fast approaching felt we should point that out. :)

(I still can't believe that I'm going to be a grandmother!) ;-)

I think of the priestess as a distict aspect from the maiden here, but you're right — I couldn't figure out how Lady Code would manifest as crone. If you have any thoughts, let me know!

Mistress of forgotten secrets, lady of lost things, all-knowing crone
Be with me as I slowly sift this pile of ancient bone
Memory of those departed, blood of those who came before
Teach me what my soul remembers, that their souls may live in you once more

Well, Lady Code is still a relatively young goddess, after all.

It's like Snow Crash, except that it actually makes sense.
