Songs, songs, songs
Feb. 5th, 2006 11:04 pmFour new songs for your lyrics-reading enjoyment — sorry, no MP3s yet!
First, and based on an idea proposed by
ccommack: "Troll Bridge". That'll be one tin piece, thank you.
Second, another song of Marinia — and another outlandish civil engineering project: "Put Up a Kite". Part of the tune is from a song by
catsittingstill.
Third, in the grand tradition of peppy, pattery songs that could have been comparative religion term papers, a song I've had on the back burner for quite a while: "That's My Story (and I'm Stickin' to It)". And yes, I earnestly believe that both myth and reason are necessary to human existence. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
And finally, another Jewish song: "Masquerade". This is not a silly song — it cuts right to the deeper themes of the holiday in question. And yes, I'm working my way through the whole calendar ;-).

Date: 2006-02-06 03:55 pm (UTC)(I found this reading
"logic can't compel you from an "is" to a "should"."
"Mythology and reason both have something to teach,
But sometimes the perfect balance seems a bit out of reach"
"A myth can keep us steady or can call us to change,
While reason can reveal the way the world is arranged."
I think you might be missing the word "be" in the last line of the fourth-to-last paragraph. (Sorry, I can't help noticing these things.)

I want an mp3 of "Masquerade," please. (And one of these days I really should show you The Comedie of Esther Queen of Persia.)

Date: 2006-02-07 01:52 am (UTC)Writing "Masquerade", I was suddenly struck by a very Jewish account of my tendency to riddling, allusive songs. In each, I take a hidden meaning and make it explicit, while taking the plain meaning (i.e., the identity of the familiar story referred to) and wrap it in allusion and metaphor. This is just a permutation on the four levels of meaning identified by the PaRaDiSe® school of interpretation theory. Is there a word for this kind of shift in perspective?
Oh, yeah — "midrash" ;-).
